Wouter Bolte
I am an Dutch artist, new to the United States. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and lived there for most of my life, before I moved to Richmond, Virginia. I had been traveling back and forth to Richmond for a while, but I have been a permanent resident since February 2008.
In this past year I have displayed and sold art at The Border Cafe on Main Street and at the Frame-Art Gallery in Highland Springs, Virginia. In June 2008 I had my first solo art show at the Frame-Art Gallery.
Traveling has been my biggest form of inspiration. As an artist I am inspired by every new environment. Luckily Richmond has a great creative scene where I can display my inspiration. I hope to become instrumental in the art community.
With having family and friends in The Netherlands and South Africa, and my traveling through South East Asia, Europe and the United States, I feel very lucky that I have been able to see various cultures and ways of life.
I have learned so much, in so little time. About other people, but more importantly about myself and the things that are truly important to me.
I have a positive outlook on our world and its people and you can see this through my art. As with everyone, there are days that I cannot ignore today's problems and express some of them in my art too.
I have a few different styles that I enjoy applying to canvas. The different countries I have visited have inspired me as a person but more so as an artist. I try to capture the beauty I find within those cultures.
I love working with abstracts, it is relaxing to me. I try to create different moods, feelings and scenes through use of color and texture. I think I have successfully finished a piece, when the canvas you are looking at is either taking you on a journey, expresses an emotion, succeeds to tell you a story or is simply just comforting to look at.
More recently I also started working on portraits. I like to challenge myself and take each day as it is. This is why I do not, yet, hold on to one specific style or subject, even though abstracts are my main focus.
I consider myself a world citizen. With my art I try to eliminate traditional borders and show a world of combined culture, texture and color.
